Also when only like part of an episode of a TV show is found, like Cousin Skeeter has one season 3 episode on Youtube where like half of it is missing.
Yeah, it's worse if it's niche or relatively obscure too. How can you get people interested if it feels like you're the only person who knows about it or remembers it?
Too true. Now I know “Most people don’t care about lost film media because they aren’t built to find that kind of stuff, it’s usually handled by professional film preservationists”, but how true is that?
We can do a lot, even as hobbyists.
Usually for me with things I find interesting, I have to scrape the barrel and hope that if I send out a signal, the right group of people will hear it and tune in.
That's to say, with incredibly obscure or weird horror media, if it isn't here, then it's r/horror. With music, then r/ObscureMedia or r/VintageObscura depending on what it is. I think Obscure Media is where I shared a fan recreation of a lost album by The Moldy Peaches and it piqued some interest in people. The community here rocks, but man, sometimes it really feels like a draw if someone will be as interested in something as weird as you. Hell, that's why I get excited sometimes seeing all the weird stuff I send to the article requests end up on iceberg charts and the person did additional research to accompany it. Hobbyists can do a lot more than people give them credit for. I'm pretty sure we've had our fair number of cases where someone had something sought after with no idea people were looking for it.

When the topic that you're looking for hits a dead end, and people think that it's completely lost until new information comes in, and people jump back onto that topic, and give out more information, and soon that particular thing gets found!
People who snatch up a piece of lost media and hog it all to themselves, like that one person who got that cancelled single from that Japanese female idol singer who killed herself in the 80s.
People who never answer back to your messages and calls.
I mean, I understand why you don’t like it, but don’t you think it seems kinda unfair to blame them? I mean, for all you know, the subject you’re looking for could be a very sensitive subject to your lead, or they may just have not seen your inquiry.

I mean, a kind polite positive message inquiring about something of their work or that they talked about on social media once? A simple "Thank you for your interest but I don't feel comfortable talking about it" replied by a "No worries, if you have a change of heart feel free to contact me again, I very much love your work" and done, that'd do the work. They don't remember? "Thank you for your interest, I'm not quite sure I remember that" Can then send them context, pictures, anything, or just make them talk about the time period if they feel like it since it often dig up memories doing so. But in all cases, you're not left to rot waiting for something that won't come, a simple "thank you" to at least stop the uncertainty, to stop the "did I do it correctly" questions popping up in your head, just giving a quick something that can stop the wait, even if the answer is not the one I'm looking for, is the sole satisfaction I need. And not seeing an inquiry after months, even years, eh, not a whole lot of chances.

Yeah. I mean, obviously it’s how shit gets found in the first place, or is what leads up to something being found, and I get what sigma hero is saying, but i guess there’s also the fact that said project could bring back awful memories for them, like say: a toxic work environment.
I think we can all agree on this one, when a source claims to have/ has something and they withdraw it from the public for whatsoever reason or bait you into believing they’ll give it over 🥲
