Back in the mid-90s when I was in my early teens, I remember my family and I returning home from a vacation one evening. I can't remember who turned on the TV, but many of us decided to watch a movie that was playing at that time. I think it was already 2/3 into the movie.
This movie showed a woman with longish black hair who apparently was kidnapped by this man in his apartment. I think the woman was a scientist. The woman was apparently locked up in a room in the apartment. One scene showed the man cutting her hair a bit to something like a short bob style haircut. I think the man was in love and obsessed with the woman. One time she wrote a letter (or similar) and threw it out the window in her room to a man who was doing something below hoping that he would read it and ask for help to save her. However, the man who kidnapped her got to the letter first and, thus, the other man did not read the rescue letter.
Another scene showed that the man prepare a fancy candlelight dinner at his place for the woman. He was hoping they would have a "romantic" dinner together. She, however, had a hidden petri dish with what I think was some sort of bacteria. She grabbed a knife (?), scrapped the petri dish slightly with the knife, and rubbed it into a slice of cake when he wasn't looking and waited for him to eat it. He ate the cake and he took her to his bedroom to sleep with her. A bit later after they went to bed and he fell asleep, he suddenly woke up with breathing problems and she used this time to try to escape.
He chased the woman out of his apartment and through other buildings at one point almost grabbing her again, but I think he fell through a large window on a building and may have died. That is how I remember the movie ending.
I could have Googled it, but using the words "Movie about a kidnapped woman" may not be specific enough and may apply to so many other movies.
