I saw Disney and Pixar's latest animated feature Coco with my family around Thanksgiving time and my family absolutely loved it. Admittedly, when I first saw the trailer for it, I thought it would almost be exactly like 20th Century Fox's 2014 animated film The Book of Life due to it having similar themes like the protagonists' family refusing to support their dreams of becoming a musician in favor of their family's traditions (i.e. a bullfighter in The Book of Life; a shoemaker in Coco) and being set during The Day of the Dead, but watching the film blew away my expectations to the point that I consider Coco to be even better than The Book of Life (I still like that movie, though, and I would also recommend that one).
I always loved Pixar's animation art style, but I think it truly shines here and each background is so nicely detailed that I felt like it made the city where the dead reside feel alive and look like a believable place to live in. The characters were also fun, likable and well-developed enough that I could easily feel sympathy for any situation that they were in, including Miguel's desire to be a musician in a family that only wants him to make shoes like his ancestors and when he gets betrayed by his so-called "great granddad" (I refuse to spoil his name; you'll see why in the climax). My favorite character in the film was Dante, the stray dog that often tags along with Miguel and the coolest thing about him is that he can also enter the world of the dead in his normal life state for quite some time before he is revealed to be a guardian spirit by Miguel and loses his normal look in the world of the dead until he returns back to the real world in the end.
I feel the film's biggest strength is its message of remembering of your family's dead loved ones even if they had done something regrettable in the past and they should never be forgotten. I also liked that the movie never slams Miguel's dreams of becoming a musician and how his real granddad tells him that he should never give up on his dreams even if he has second thoughts about it. The voice acting was fantastic, and I feel that every voice actor that Pixar hired did a great job on conveying the character's emotions and the film's soundtrack was great.
In short, this movie is awesome and I totally recommend watching it for its beautiful backgrounds, fantastic voice acting, and lovable characters. This is easily some of the best animated films that Pixar has created and is easily now in the top of my favorite Disney and Pixar animated films.
