I saw this show in the early-mid 90s It looked like it was made in the late 80s-early 90s from what I remember
the following is a description of the single episode I saw:
A grade school aged boy embarrasses himself at school in front of a girl he likes, so he pretends to be sick to not have to go to school the next day. When he's home sick, he decides he is going to commit suicide by asking for ginger-ale so he can slip in some stuff from a chemistry set that he thinks will accomplish this. His best friend camps out in front of his house to see if he will actually do it. His friend has a bowl cut and glasses, uses the catchphrase, "holly cow" frequently, and eats peanut butter and Brussel sprout sandwiches out of a cooler he brought. Some of the neighborhood kids gather around to see whats up.
Turns out, nothing happens when he drinks the ginger-ale because the stuff he put in turns out to be harmless. His dad, who is sort of a Patrick Duffy type, figures out what he's doing and remarks that he tried the same thing with the chemistry set when he was his age with the same result.
Kind of the same vibe as the Wonder Years but it was somewhat wtf as you can see.
was just thinking about it, and there's the possibility it could have been religious. It kind of had that vibe of one of those family shows/movies produced by a religious institution but in plot doesn't have to do with religious subject matter literally (like Buttercream Gang, or Just Like Dad for example)
thanks to people at the Retrojunk.com forum and redditors at the r/tipofmytongue Reddit, I've figured out the title and some of the air dates.
The name is, "What's Wrong With Neil?" (1989).
Here is all the information I know so far:
It's apparently an episode of the Canadian anthology series, "Family Pictures" according to the writer on his blog, but I can't find any proof of existence of this series, too generic a title to find anything easily I guess.
It's about a boy who becomes horribly embarrassed by an incident with a bully who steels and reads outloud a love letter he wrote to his crush. He's so humiliated he pretends to be sick so he doesn't have to go to school, and decides he's going to "kill himself" by drinking a concoction of Ginger ale and some liquid he finds in a chemistry set. Word gets around so a bunch of neighborhood kids gather in front of his house to see if he will actually do it. Humorously, in the end, nothing happens because the liquid from the chemistry set turns out to be completely harmless.
It was written by Paul Vitols of "Odyssey" fame.
It originally aired:
in Canada on March 9th, 1989 on CBC
in the UK on July 4th, 1990 on BBC One (London) on the same day as the World Cup Semi Final
It also aired in the US in the early 90s which is where I saw it myself but I don't remember the channel or date nor have found any info on those. I guessing i might have seen it on Nickelodeon's "Special Delivery" but that's just conjecture.
So where I'm at now is that I'm trying to find a copy or somewhere this is viewable at this point.
i'll check my grandads loft, i know he has every england match, both semi finals 3rd place playoff and final on a bunch of recorded vhs' from that time so HOPEFULLY he may have just recorded some stuff before hand

Hello! Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I didn't know that there was any more activity on this topic after my last post at the time!
To add some more info it was the same day as the July 4th 1990 West Germany vs England semi final:
Although, I'm a little confused since the archival information doesn't show this as airing on the same channel (it might have been on the same day, but on a different channel, and I can't find what channels aired the world cup specifically, aside from some general information saying it was carried by the BBC and ITV):
