Jim Henson's Animal Show was recently put up for streaming on the Roku Channel, and it reminded me of something from my childhood. Back in the '90s, there was a temporary exhibit at the California ScienCenter in Los Angeles, and one the displays was a demonstration of live blue screen effects, where kids could interact with a short skit featuring the character Yves St. La Roache. You'd appear on-screen in his kitchen, and he would see you, thinking you were some sort of pest, and start trying to hit you with a fly swatter.
Anyway, I never actually saw the Animal Show as a kid, probably because I didn't watch a whole lot of Fox Kids (and Animal Planet was still a premium channel), but when I saw it on my Roku, I immediately recognized the cockroach character as being from that exhibit. It was all about illusions and special effects, and I also remember a thing contributed by Penn & Teller, showing off a mirror illusion.
