Originally, actor Tim Curry was supposed to voice the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and recorded three to four whole episodes. However, for reasons that vary depending on the source, he was replaced with Mark Hamill, whose portrayal has since gone on to be considered by many people to be the definitive voice of the character.
