Hi! I'm a YouTuber named dabhdude. While I won't go into too great of detail with all that has happened, I wanted to ask a question about Lost Media. First, you might want some background (this is going to be lengthy either way, so I apologize in advance).
About April or May 2018 I was asked by someone who was in a lot of my earlier videos (2015-2017) if I could private most of the videos they were in, as they had decided to move on. I obliged and understood their decision. I also took this opportunity to private some old videos I personally wasn't proud of (mainly a bunch of ancient videos from when I was 13, many of which never got over 100 views). I've also had a few videos over the years where I did, say, a collab with someone, and they'd ask for those to be removed too, and I'd oblige those requests as well.
Recently, some people have been asking about the videos, and I've had to tell people that I told this person I would keep the videos they wanted private as private, and that while the videos might eventually come back, it won't be anytime soon (within the next couple of years at least).
So despite most of the videos with this person never even garnering a 4-digit view count (a couple did, but most didn't ever get to even 1000), some people took it upon themselves to claim it as "lost media" and start reuploading it. I've had to begin taking down reuploads of my content for a couple reasons:
1. I told people exactly where the content is and that, no, it isn't really lost, at least not in the typical sense (it hasn't been erased by the sands of time. We're not looking for some rare piece of lost media where the original creator has died, the original copies burned down in a fire at some archival warehouse, and the only existing copy is on a Betamax tape that's stored in someone's attic in the middle of rural Kentucky. I know where the videos are, I've been keeping good backups, especially recently, but I'm keeping them private mainly because of the promise I made.)
2. I told them that because I'm respecting this person's decision to have the content I did with them private, that they should also honor it, or at the very least have them honor MY decision to keep MY videos private.
3. That no, people have no RIGHT to reupload my content under the guise of lost media preservation, especially since people can no longer say they just didn't know, since I've actively told people (and especially one reuploader in particular) that I am specifically denying them permission to reupload my content.
Also side note, a lot of the content people are looking for on my channel, or who some people decide to reupload, isn't even private. It's unlisted, and I've given them an area where I put said unlisted videos. Harder to find? Yes. Unable to be viewed? No.
Anyways, I have two questions:
1. What do you think of my situation? And no, this isn't from a "Well you should keep everything public forever and ever." perspective. While I would love to do that, in part to get people off my back about it, and because I really don't care for having to make my videos private, I'm also trying to respect this person who has asked me to, let's be honest, not be remembered.
2. Like the subject of this thread says, where is the line between lost media archiving and full on stealing? If someone tells you no, you may not reupload my content, shouldn't it be that you respect their wishes, especially if you know that the content is still there, you just can't see it due to the reasons listed above?
Also, one last thing. If someone managed to download a copy of a video before it was made private, I'm obviously not going to kick down their door and order them to delete it from their computer. By all means, if you have it, keep it. Just don't go reuploading it.
Hopefully this all has made sense, and I can't wait to hear your responses.
