Since His Dark Materials is airing on the BBC and HBO, I thought this would be the right time to post about the missing scenes from "The Golden Compass". In 2007, The Golden Compass came out to poor reviews and a boycott from religious organizations. The studio, in a panic, decided to cut a nearly three hour film to just under two, virtually every scene has cuts according to Weitz. New Line shuffled the order of two major sequences and deleted an ending that was considered too "downbeat." None of the missing material has been released in full. However, evidence of the ending still exists within trailers and, surprisingly enough, merchandise that was released prior to the films premiere. A fan reconstruction from story boards and bits of footage floating around the internet has been posted. The director himself showed a couple of images on twitter of the deleted ending.
So, I'm wondering, is there any possible way of seeing this footage (at the very least, the ending!)? Would New Line release a director's cut? With the apparent popularity of the new show, one would think they would want to capitalize on it.
