I haven’t seen this movie but heard a lot about via reviews. The Keep is a 1983 horror film directed by Michael Mann. And it’s based on the novel of the same name by F. Paul Wilson. It takes place in 1941, the Nazis take over a small Romanian village located in the Carpathian Alps. Occupying a citadel where it has metallic crosses on its wall. One night two Germans decided to steal one of the crosses unbeknownst to them they unleash something that’s been locked away. Obliviously the film had a very troubled production. As it was filmed largely in a slate quarry for the exteriors in Wales for 13 weeks. Additional filming took a total of 22 weeks I believe for the scenes set inside. For the design of Molasar, Mann really wasn’t sure how it would look. While, two weeks intro post-production the lead visual effects artist died. Causing huge problems because no one knew how to finish the effects. In a interview Mann gave, he said that 260 effects shots were done by him. Mann’s cut was 210 minutes long. Then the studio screened a two hour cut of the film in front of a test audience as it did poorly. Ultimately Paramount cut it to 96 minutes. Footage shown in the trailer were scenes not shown. A conversation between Woermann and Alexandru saying that it was built to keep something in. Molasar talking to Cuza as he asks “What are you?” one more time. When Eva meets Glaeken by asking if she had found what she was looking for and expected to find him. Then he touches her face saying to him “What’s happening to me?” Shots that are not in the film. Glaeken walking inside the keep with his eyes white. Glaeken standing at the entrance looking over Molasar’s white smoke. An alternate version of a scene where Glaken is walking towards the room where Molasar is waiting. His sword is covered by a glowing light. Originally, there was a going to be filmed where Molasar kills all the Germans inside but shot where some of the soldiers heads blown were shot just for that scene as they we’re never finished. Several endings were to be filmed after the crew and cinematographer had left.
