When I was very young I would go see "Theatre for Young Audiences" at South Coast Repertoire. A lot of the plays they would put on were just adaptations of children's books, but there were a couple of original ones. The two I remember most fondly are "Imagine" and "The Only Child".
"Imagine" was about this kid who stops playing with his imaginary friend, so he meets other abandoned friends and goes on adventures with this other little girl. I remember there was a song with giant crayons singing their names. It was really weird but I remember it fondly.
"The Only Child" was about a little girl who lives with her parent, who make ice cream for a living. She gets jealous of her new younger siblings and convinces them both to run away from home. The little sister joins the circus while the brother goes and becomes a super hero. I think she also tells the brother that the parents are going to send him to boarding school for misbehaving little boys. There's also a bit where the little girl hides in the ice cream freezer because the parents are focused on trying to find her siblings and still not paying attention to her. She sings this sad song about how she'll become the Ice Cream Princess before freezing solid. Her family finds her in the climax and thaw her out by hugging her.
I managed to find the playbills for the shows on the SCR website. It lists the names of the songs, and who wrote the plays. I tried googling the playwrites, but I couldn't find the scripts or lyrics to the songs for either plays. I'd love to find either play's scripts, but I'd especially like to hear the music again or just see the sheet music. Links to the playbills below.
