Speedy Video, a Malaysian Dubbing Studio, is infamous for producing poor-quality English dubs of the Dragon Ball Z series. It was recently discovered they also produced an English dub of another popular Toei series, Sailor Moon. Currently, the only known season to be dubbed by them is the second season, Sailor Moon R.
I recently discovered this after seeing clips posted to twitter. I tried to look more into this but couldnβt anything substantial. I initially found a page on the Dragon Ball Z Speedy dub wiki that lists all known shows Seedy dubbed. In this article, they list their source as a video that is no longer available.
Digging deeper, I found an ebay listing for a VCD copy of the first two episodes of Sailor Moon R. This listing was already sold by the time I found it. There are also two clips on youtube, though I forget what episodes these are from because I havenβt rewatched R in years, though I am pretty sure these are from later in the season.
I have a friend who grew up in the Philippines, from 1994-1997. His memory is foggy, but he may have actually seen a few episodes on tv, though he is unsure if they were actually dubbed in English or English subbed. Only episode he remembers specifically is episode 32, which is R.
I was looking through the comments on the youtube videos again and I completely missed the first comment my first run through
From what I've been able to find out about Speedy's Sailor Moon dub, they just dubbed over Chinese VCDs, added in different music, renamed some characters for no apparent reason, looped sound effects, and removed many sound effects (perhaps to cover up the fact that they dubbed over Chinese VCDs).
I haven't seen this info anywhere else but considering the fact I know the music playing was definitely not the original soundtrack I'd say this is probably true.
Having watched the VCD in question, the audio quality would suggest that is the case. I haven't been able to find discs beyond those two episodes, but the first two make me look fondly on the Dic version by comparison.

This is both very weird and interesting at the same time. π Also isn't it a bit strange that they started dubbing the series from R instead of S1? Maybe there's a dub for season 1 too?
Last but not least: do we do know if the Speedy Video dub went past the Ail/Ann saga?
