In the UK & Ireland, there used to be a service for playing games on your TV using your remote as a controller. You’ve probably heard of it if you’re from the UK or Ireland, it was called Sky Gamestar. Most of their games consisted of games based on popular kids shows at the time (e.g SpongeBob, Ben 10, Codename Kids Next Door) and most shows featured would have more than one game, though one-off games based on a show were featured too.
Almost all of their games were developed by Denki. See here for a closer look of their games: tinyurl.com/y3uwm3qt
As you can see, a similar service existed outside of Sky Gamestar, and I’m guessing it was US-based. I’m not sure what it was called, but “OpenTV” games are their Sky Games, while “MediaHighway” are their non-Sky games, which I have no experience with.
There’d be no way to buy their games, you’d have to have to text them and 2 pounds or euro would be deducted from your bank account, and some of their games would be free to play for 24 hours (they’d swap over what games they had each Thursday).
Without paying, you’d be able to play small portions of their games, like the first few levels. But for some reason, some games wouldn’t be playable at all without paying. There was also the famous Beehive Bedlam, which was free to play at all times. They’d also have rare occasions were you could play a selected game for free until the next when the games swapped over, for example, there was this time that their All Grown Up! game was free to play for a week.
My favourites of theirs were the games based on cartoons like SpongeBob, Looney Tunes, Codename Kids Next Door, Ed, Edd, ‘n Eddy, to name a few.
However, this is relevant to lost media because when the service shut down on January 31, 2015, all of these games became lost (aside from Beehive Bedlam). There’s nowhere to download their files, no emulators, nothing, unless Sky decides to release them themselves, and I could ask Denki, although I doubt they’d just give me the games like that.
Does anyone remember these games or have any knowledge how to access them or anything like that? Thanks!
