so i was looking through a list of PS1 games on wikipedia for when i start my game collection, i sorted the games in chronological order and the game at the top of the list took my interest as it seemingly had no release dates in either Japan, Europe or North America. the game was simply titled "Ainori", i looked it up to see if there is any information on it but there wasn't that much. all i could find out about the game was that it was apparently supposed to be developed and published by the defunct game company Techmo as well as a gamespot page that has absolutely nothing on it except "canceled" underneath the title. i even looked it up on unseen64 and there was nothing. the closest thing i could actually find to information on the game itself is a wikipedia article on a 1999 japanese reality TV show of the same name, leading me to believe this show had something to do with the game. however that might not be the case considering the game was apparently supposed to be one of the earliest PS1 games, meaning if it had a release date it would have to have been sometime around 1994.
Part of me thinks this a hoax game or a lie someone put up in the internet, but i don't know.
First of all, Tecmo isn't defunct. I think they're the developers of Dead or Alive and Fatal Frame; Koei Tecmo are the ones in charge of anything Musou/Warriors and Warriors Orochi related, alongside Omega Force.
While the info about the game is scarce, if we assume the game was based on the TV show, then Ainori CAN'T be an early PS1 game since the TV show's original broadcast started in 1999 (according to Wikipedia, October 11, 1999), so it would've been a late PS1 game, which means that Tecmo could've decided to cancel the game before the PS2 was about to arrive.
Googling the Japanese name followed by PS1 will lead you to a bunch of car games like Crazy Taxi and a blog talking about a budget game part of the Simple 1500 Series, called THE ゼロヨン (the zeroyon), this one wasn't released outside of Japan. At first, I thought The Zeroyon could be Ainori, but it turns out that the budget game was developed by Quintet (Planet Laika, co-developed with Zeque, they also made Kowloon's Gate). It was released in 2001, so the timeline fits.
This is all I could find. Honestly I believe that Ainori could've been like Irritating Stick (seriously): a PS1 game based on a TV Show, but it got cancelled, most likely because the PS2 was on its way; even tho in Japan, the PS1 officially died until 2007. They probably thought this situation was similar to the bunch of Nintendo 64 games being ported to the GameCube or canceled because of the cube's release.
If you're interested, this is the Japanese blog that appeared when I searched for Ainori in Japanese, talking about The Zeroyon: sinplelove.jp/blog-entry-4908.html

though if it really was cancelled because of the PS2, than why didn't they just make it for the PS2 instead of just cancelling it outright? unless doing that would require some kind of technical thing i'm not aware of, that seems a little sketchy. Did they just think it wouldn't have made enough money? was it censorship issues? maybe it was some kind of techinical thing like i stated before? strange
also, if it really was cancelled for that reason, than why is there so little information about it? was the game just that obscure? or were they intentionally removing information about it?
the former is probably more likely i guess, but the more interesting would be the latter

I assumed it got cancelled because of the PS2's arrival (and I even said that the PS1 officially died in 2007 in Japan), but I'm starting to believe that the game was probably planned, but never made, and then cancelled, maybe after realizing that Irritating Stick, a game that was also based on a Japanese TV show, received mixed ratings.
But assuming that isn't 100% right either, as we don't even know if Ainori by Tecmo was actually a tie-in to Ainori the TV Show, or an original game that happened to share the name of the TV show in the first place.
Well... we don't even know where this title came from, the information is THAT scarce. It might as well be a hoax posted in Wikipedia (probably thinking it was an actual cancelled game).

well, if it was a hoax, than why does gamespot even have a page on it?
if gamespot isn't known for inncuracies, than this is most likely a real cancelled game.
i used the initial famitsu link you gave me and it said that the page was deleted, so i had to skim through the wikipedia article you linked me to find the actual page through the source links. turns out the famitsu page really does exist, its just you can only get to it through wikipedia for some strange reason.

That was a good find. So, the game was a tie-in to the TV show after all. And it probably got cancelled in a very early stage of development, causing the information around to the title to be really scarce. I think now what it's left is to see if we can find any reasons as to why the game was cancelled.
The Famitsu page says that the game was scheduled to be released in spring 2002. Maybe the initial announcement of the game was while the show began airing (1999) and that's where all of the information comes from.

wow this thread got a lot more attention than i thought
a couple new things:
i found a few new sources, not that much new information but its still worth looking at. one is a gamefaqs page for the game (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/566384-ainori) and a blogspot post about the game with mock-up boxart that i will attach here (http://zero2zed-playstation1.blogspot.com/2017/08/0-to-z-of-playstation-1-games-ainori.html)
the odd thing about these sources is that they both say ainori was an action game. which is strange because according to what we found a month ago, the game was based off the 1999 japanese TV show, which from what i remember reading about was some sort of romantic comedy show about a traveling "love bus". this makes me think one of three scenarios:
- the game was supposed to be a mixture of action and romantic comedy - the game may have been originally intended to be an action game not based off the show but some entity, possibly an executive of some sort changed it to be based off the show. however this seems unlikely due to how early it was cancelled during development and the meaning of the word "ainori" meaing "ride together or "car pool". - the "action game" thing is very possibly misinformation spread online or some kind of marketing tactic
