Most people lurk here and just come by just to see the progress of searches. I believe that's because they don't know how to search for lost media. I think there should be some guide on what tools to use and such. This should cause an optimal amount of people contributing. What do you guys think?
I feel like it's difficult to put together a guide on this. It's so different for pretty much every search, and everyone has access to such different tools, it's hard to standardize it. There was one case where someone found a TV show on page 50 something on Google, and another where someone just played around with a URL and managed to find a very well hidden page with the video they were searching for, so things can be found in really unusual and unlikely ways. Also, I think it's pretty easy to pick up the basics on where to start searches from looking at past successful ones and even current ones (contacting creators, copyright holders, studios, etc.). As for lurkers, there's nothing wrong with that if someone just wants to see progress of a search, and if they're not sure what to do/what's already been done, they can ask. There might be some who just lurk because they don't know where to start, but I don't think it's ALL of them.
The only four things you should never do in a search effort is to spam unrelated stuff on a thread (unless you are replying to answer another user's questions), post fake leads and images of your "findings", harrassing/attacking other users and the creators that people are trying to contact as it turns them off from helping the search effort, and repeatedly bumping the thread when no one replies to it as it makes a lot of people less likely to contribute to it.
That's the common sense way of doing search efforts and doing any of the four can easily get you in trouble.

Despite the frustrations of normal day life we go through, the best thing to do about it is still being happy for our friends and family.
