There's one little problem if you are going to use a flash drive (or any |USB device) on windows 3.1. There will be a lack of driver support. While it is risky to do so, I believe the best course of action here is to either take the hard drive out and use a hdd to usb device to extract the files or if this laptop supports it, try to network the laptop to another computer and get the files that way.
I believe they mean they will try to transfer data off the device VIA some other means and then dump it onto a usb stick for portability.

I'm surprised a computer repair shop was unable to help. It sounds like the quickest, easiest thing to do is to replace the floppy drive. Old Toshiba floppy drives are about $15

From what I've seen, different computer repair shops have different abilities. Some might only have people able to do more basic repairs and some have people who can do all sorts of specialized services.
An USB will unfortunately be of no use to you, as it does not support USB, even if there was PCMCIA expansion for this as a result of the OS. what you can do to get the information off is one of two ways, you can make use of a PCMCIA modem, there's a 56K modem available for this specific model, or you can use a memory card, as far as I know you do get memory card USB adapters. Here is a site that you can look at for those Parts, and here is the manual for the laptop. Hope this helps.
Sorry for the long period without any news. I have not ordered a memory card nor an adapter yet, and it will probably take a while before i do so. In the meantime, i might upload a couple of screenshots featuring parts of the scripts and pitches.
