Okay so Cartoon Brew once posted this article showing different work pieces from the cancelled Dreamworks film Me and My Shadow. It was unfortunately promptly taken down by NBC Universal and the original clips seemed to vanish from its original blog location from someone who worked on it. I have not seen this reuploaded anywhere but have seen these animations (http://animationalchemy.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/flashback-me-my-shadow.html & www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Hf7k-hr-8), and like the latter this might also have Bill Hader voicing the shadow.
The animation and design are stunning in it... what a shame this movie was cancelled.
Wait, has this movie gotten a LMW article yet?
It's on the article request list. However, it's really unclear if it's cancelled or not. There was a point where it was dropped from the schedule yet still in production. There's also a film by Dreamworks simply called Shadows, but no one knows if it's still in development or if it's related to Me and My Shadow. I did find an article with some more concept art, and Josh Gad posted an Instagram picture with the recording script cover.
It would be really neat if DreamWorks Animation did go ahead and greenlight this film for production, but it hasn't been officially confirmed yet that it has been cancelled yet, so it's more like that the film is "On Hold" for now similar to Sony's CGI-animated film on Popeye that is still listed on Sony Animation's website as a film in development despite losing its original director. Many planned animated films in development go under development hell for various reasons, so this isn't a new concept, as this film seems to be put on hold after DreamWorks broke away from Paramount in 2012 and the film was originally planned to be released sometime in Summer of 2014 had it moved much further in production.
Still though, it would be nice to see those demonstration videos of Bill Hader voicing the shadow.
Despite the frustrations of normal day life we go through, the best thing to do about it is still being happy for our friends and family.
This shadow being animated traditionally 2D-style while the rest of the movie is CGI 3D is quite reminiscent of Maui's tattoos in Disney's Moana, don't you think?

Exactly! It'd be on a bit of a larger scale, since the shadows would presumably have a larger role, but Moana at least shows that the style is doable.

And the tattoo animation was done by Eric Goldberg, the only major 2D animator left at Disney. The man's work is awesome, a great inspiration for those who are interested into animation.

I want Disney to do more things like that, since they still have at least one person. I absolutely love 3D animation, especially with how it's getting more and more realistic nowadays, but there's still something about traditional 2D animation that's really beautiful.

Though, we cannot expect Disney to make anything else than 3D animated films in the future, considering it looks more "complex" and "expensive" than traditional 2D.
I keep hearing about Paperman-style animation that uses 3D to look like 2D, but it seems Disney is still very reluctant to use it further since it still looks too much like 2D. They really didn't do much with the Paperman style since 6 years ago.
