There are many mysteries surrounding the earliest known version of Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which was first shown off in E3 2010. How much more interesting would the story have been? Would stickers have played as big of a role? Despite having more consistency with its predecessors, would it still have abandoned all continuity? Would it have been a true return to form after Super Paper Mario? And besides the Chain Chomp, just how many other partners did they plan and subsequently abandon?
I present to you, the only known video footage of the game at this stage of development. Despite the recording being very shaky and only ten seconds long, those ten seconds alone give us quite a bit of information, mainly about Mario's new Chain Chomp partner and its abilities. We also know that some visual effects in the final game, such as the choppier animation for Mario, were planned early on.
Some of you may know that this isn't the only existing evidence of this build of the game. There exists several screenshots still floating around to this day. Here they are, compiled in one image. (The one of Mario going up a spiral staircase is in the final game, so ignore that) It's assumed that these were grabbed from the full demo, as some of these scenes (Namely the Wiggler in the poison forest, Mario walking in the grassland, and the Whomp in the dungeon) can be seen there.
Back to the main subject here, the full demo. Despite only recording ten seconds of the demo, Nintendo World Report actually recorded the full audio, which can be heard here:
Pretty strange, huh? believe someone at some point reached out to Nintendo World Report about this, and they said that those ten seconds of video were all they got. I could be wrong though, it's been a while. However. Isn't it a bit odd that the only video footage of this demo is just ten seconds of a shaky recording? Surely someone else out there had to have recorded it? It's not like this was some kind of top secret private thing. These were publicly available demos at E3. To think that out of all the people who went there, only Nintendo World Report recorded this, is simply bizzare. Surely someone out there has a cleaner recording. But until then, Paper Mario 2010 will remain a mystery...
