Nostalgia, but allegedly it IS NOT going around according to someone involved with the search who say they contacted Gordon Galbraith. I left a link in my original post where he makes the claim, and apparently it is someone who has spoken with the person who runs this page or who had at least spoken to whoever released this audio.
The only problem is I didn’t shove it in her face. I asked for permission to send a link without the gunshot (not my exact words, I said “that does not include the last 10 seconds”) got no response so I never sent any link or presented any recording.

Oh, that makes it 100% a-okay and totally not intrusive at all.
"Hey, check out this recording of your friend's tragic death that's almost certainly scarred you for life! Don't worry, the gunshot's missing so it's all good!"
Dude, either you are a young/naive person with some empathy skills to build, or you're being obtuse. But in case it's the former, people don't like having past trauma shoved in their face. Especially not at random, and even more especially at the behest of strangers itching to satiate their morbid curiosity without any respect for the dead. Actions similar to yours have deliberately hurt the victims family all over again, as the recent pages of this thread show. You are causing tangible harm to other people no matter how you justify it to yourself.
My mom was raped. My uncle committed suicide. My dad had surgery he almost didnt survive. If some dunderhead asked me to ID crime photos or footage or audio related to those events, I know for a fact it would greatly upset me and I would be very angry with the person doing it.
Honestly I'm not surprised that people with little to no empathy still show up to this thread, and I doubt this will be the last time.
Which is exactly why it ought to be locked. It's a stain on our community and what we are supposed to represent. Threads in this sub-forum tend to revolve around bringing attention to something and subsequently coordinating search efforts for its retrieval. Therefore, by keeping this thread open, the mods are implicitly condoning the kind of crude, amateur, unasked-for """"investigating"""" as conducted by people like ImJunkie, even if they may explicitly deny that fact. (In a post on page 30-something which no one will see.) I'm sure some may take offense to what I just said, but at the very least we should all be able to agree it sends a mixed message.
I'm all for free speech and I'm all for searching for explicit content (as in like, X-rated films and stuff) but it's clear that this little endeavor is continuously doing real harm to the surviving victims. Maybe sleazy """"detectives"""" are gonna harass those poor people anyway, but the LMW should not be the forum in which such acts are conducted or encouraged. (Implicitly or explicitly.) The duty to actively prevent further harm should supercede "muh history" / "Im JuSt ReSpEcTiNg HeR wIsH tHe TaPe Be SeEn"
If this keeps up it WILL give lost media archivalists--y'know, the ones that actually find and preserve (nearly) lost films/TV/books--a bad name. And it may lead to actual legal consequences for individual participants and/or the site as a whole.
I see you just want to be a hero, so I’m done talking with you. This is not why I am here.
Hero? As theCarbonFreeze said, you are not some researcher or historian. You just want to satisfy your morbid curiosity. I understand the idea of the release of this material is appealing for some folks, but bothering the people who are still dealing with the consequences of it just for curiosity it is plainly WRONG. You only do this because you are protected by the anonymity internet provides. Otherwise, would you ask somebody to share some relative's death footage in the real world?

There is also a new rule regarding found NSFL content - none of it is to be posted anywhere in the LMW community (no exceptions). You can talk about found NSFL media, but there are to be no more links, whatsoever.

Junkie I hope the tape gets burned and completely lost just to spite you. You absolutely do not deserve to have the satisfaction of finding it, especially if it resurfaces memories of that traumatic incident for your sick entertainment. You disgust me and the rest of the community.

I have to ask the mods: is it really worth hosting this conversation that clearly upsets so many people on and off the forum, in order to placate people like Junkie? Is it worth sowing discord and lumping us all in with the harassment these parasites are conducting just to find a 2 minute death video? I think it's a poison pill, and if the tape is ever found it'll be a pyrric victory at best.
Earlier in the thread, dycaite said words to the effect of "a lot of people come here to discuss the tape tho," as though the attention is a positive. I say it is not a positive when the people who come here are so unscrupulous. It looks like the mods approve of this behavior in the absence of any declaration to the contrary, and especially with the non-enforcement of the rules as pointed out by nostalgiaguy. That leaves a real bad taste in my mouth.
