So back in the early 1980s DC Comics tried several reboots of Captain Marvel. Because of the strange joint copyright held with Marvel comics DC could use the character but couldn't use the title Captain Marvel. Thus there was serious talk of changing the character's name.
One of these pitches was by writer/editor Roy Thomas and artist Don Newton was entitled "Captain Thunder." A complete reboot this comic would have remained Billy Batson as Black. The probject was never completed and the book wasn't published although an image of Captain Thunder drawn by Newton appeared in an issue of Comic Buyers Guide in 1982. Years later artist Jerry Ordway inked and colored the picture for a Shazam fan site. No idea if any other information on this pitch is out there.
Also the Marvel character of Monica Rambeau was created in part as a jab at DC for backing out of giving the venerable Captain Marvel title to a Black character.
