One project that always sparks my interest that unfortunately never was made was a 3D motion-capture animated remake of the 1968 animated fantasy musical classic "Yellow Submarine", starring everyone's favorite band "The Beatles". I think the Beatles music is some classic stuff, and this film showed what animation could do in the 1960s, and also what the 1960s could do to the mind. There was a finished look dev test for the project talked about below that has never seen the light of day.
The film was about The Beatles going on adventures in their Yellow Submarine and trying to save Pepperland from a group of creatures called the Blue meanies, who hate music.
In 2009, Disney and Apple Corps. announced a 3D animated remake of the film directed by Robert Zemeckis ("Back to the Future", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Forrest Gump", "Cast Away", etc.). Motion-capture would be used, as with his previous films "The Polar Express", "Beowulf", and "A Christmas Carol". The film would be produced and animated by ImageMovers Digital (a joint-venture animation facility created by Disney and Robert Zemeckis to produce 3D motion capture animated films) (they also made "A Christmas Carol"). Disney was planning to release the film in Summer 2012, in time for the Olympic Games in London.
The cast was to include Peter Serafonowicz ("Guardians of the Galaxy", "Shaun of the Dead", "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace") as Paul McCartney, Dean Lennox Kelly ("Gold Rush", "Being Human", "Doctor Who") as John Lennon, Cary Elwes ("The Princess Bride", "A Christmas Carol", "Robin Hood: Men In Tights") as George Harrison, Adam Campbell ("Date Movie", "Epic Movie") as Ringo Starr, and David Tennant ("Doctor Who", "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", "Jessica Jones") as the Chief Blue Meanie.
However, during the concept art and casting stage, Disney decided to shut down ImageMovers Digital due to the successful yet unsatisfactory box office results of "A Christmas Carol". The studio would close by January 2011, after production was completed on "Mars Needs Moms" (which was not directed by Zemeckis, but was directed by Simon Wells, the Great Grandson of H.G. Wells (author of "The War of the Worlds"). This closure though didn't affect "Yellow Submarine", as Zemeckis' main studio (ImageMovers) would produce the film with Disney. It was to start shooting in April 2011. In March 2011, "Mars Needs Moms" bombed (it is currently Disney biggest flop, and the 2nd biggest flop of all time behind "47 Ronin") making only $39 Million against its $150 Million budget. The submarine was sunk by Disney, but he was allowed to take it to other studios. He made a two-year first-look producing deal with Universal (which would include both live-action and motion-capture projects). Universal didn't want it, so Zemeckis gave up in 2012.
Concept art and a few animation tests are still hanging around online, but the Finished look dev test has yet to be seen by the public. Do any of you know anything more about the project that I don't?, and do you know anything about the lost animation test.
