I want to give thanks to YouTube users Alexandromartinez508 and RaptorGirlLogoarchive2 for helping me find this obscure footage.
On June 9th, 2024, two of the YouTube users reached out to me claiming the original opening and closing of Oliver and Company by far was found in an obscure 1997 France VHS. I bought a SECAM formatted VHS from France on eBay containing the French version of the movie Oliver and Company. As I was scanning and digitising the whole vhs, I found the unexpected. Disney did indeed put the earlier version of their castle logo that was seen during the mid to late 1980s in this movie as it was likely the original theatrical print. But the version that debuted on VHS in the U.S. is the updated remastered theatrical release. Disney at the time only bothered to release newer movies on home video if rereleased in theaters. It was likely that the original version was not used in U.S. home and digital prints is because of how dirty the film is or that they don’t want to release new movies on vhs until several years later. But yeah I found it with the help of other two people online who claimed that they knew about where it was found but they didn’t know how to digitise the footage.
The castle logo variant that we all know in Oliver and company in US and most international VHs, laserdiscs, current Blu-ray and dvd releases and digital, Disney+ prints is the lighter blue 1991 version. It debuted in Beauty and the Beast.
The earlier version was darker blue and tinted similar to the variants from Cinderella 1987 rerelease and Honey I shrunk the kids. The ratio in the France VHS is 4:3 pan and scan. I added the link of the original after a slight restoration. I also have the vhs opening below.
I even rediscovered an alternate 1990 variant of the Walt Disney Pictures logo from an Italy VHS.
The search for the original variant of Disney’s logo specifically for Oliver and company has been around since I first watched the movie on a U.S. vhs. Other than me and the other few people, no one else around the world was bothered to search the lost footage specifically from Oliver and company because they all have a perception that it was lost for good. I never like Disney ruining the movies they first made and don’t understand how art is precious in its original form but they are stuck living in their own delusional fantasyland. I’m worried that the original 35mm print from 1988 was lost and forgotten because the Walt Disney company cares more about money than creativity.
To clear things off, there is barely a difference of Oliver and Company Asa. full movie with the U.S. and France home media versions. The only difference that I know is that the France vhs uses a slightly dirtier theatrical print (including the dirt, dust, hair and other materials but that is normal for its time) that lasted about a few minutes shorter due to its PAL/SECAM format and slightly shorter end credits scene. I am impressed with the quality of the movie in the foreign VHS . I am still trying to scan the 1997 France LD version because we don’t have SECAM OR PAL lLD players in player so I have it to a professional video duplicator that would scan and digitise it overseas. I don’t know what the early France DVD contains as I feared it uses the 1996 rerelease version. In short, the opening and closing logos are the only big difference as they have different color tints and semi circle arches.
I’m worried about the same thing for The Great Mouse Detective, which is my next movie I’m going to work on. (While the whole movie was already entirely restored from the 1986 theatrical lpp (restoring the original movie title card) the original 1985 variant of the Disney castle logo was not present in its 1992 rerelease on vhs, laserdisc and current 2010/2012 Blu-ray, DVD, digital, Disney+ prints. It was also believed to be lost and so far nothing was found but my search for it will continue).
