Introduction
Greetings to all
To provide some clarity to this certain context I’m an active collector in VHS tapes as like many of the fellow members of the group. So, it would come as no surprise that during the course of late last year, when my local high school’s English department was clearing out its storage of tapes I took no hesitation in obtaining as much tapes as possible after been provided permission to do so. Unfortunately, due to the sudden notice of the clearance, I did not have the needed storage to collect the majority of the tapes. Meaning many of them were disposed of by the nearby skip bin that I had irrationally chosen to jump into in search for more tapes. Overall, I managed to gain a total of 15 tapes with the Majority being pre-recorded SKC E-180 tapes.
From prior research of other SKC casing designs in comparison with my own tapes’ minimalistic style of bent lines of red to orange schemes imposed onto a plain white background, I can suggest that these certain tapes where issued pre-1985, but I’m not certain.
Focus
Proceeding with the essential focus at hand, once I finally got around to viewing all the tapes, I came to find some interest in two specific shows within the collection. Once viewing all possible episodes on the tapes, I proceeded to conduct some research on these shows. However, after some extensive efforts, it came apparent that any remote sources of clips, article excerpts or archival preservation were simply non-existent. I first assumed that due to the broad nature of each show’s title being simply Detective – Mini Mysteries and Writing, research of the shows would be more of a challenge to find. Even with key notes from the recordings themselves showing that these shows were originally broadcasted on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), archives from the station’s official archive currently have these titles unlisted.
In hopes of gaining more accurate understandings of these works, I have decided to ask for assistance from you all in determining if I am in fact in possession of lost Australian media or I have just simply misinterpreted my research. With frequent actions of misplacement as well as erasing of decades worth of this nation’s media material, it would be beneficial to know that I have somewhat contributed in the efforts of restoring this field of history.
With all possible info related to each series, here is some general description that may help in a proposed search for more information or footage.
Detective – Mini Mysteries
Estimated to have been broadcasted in the mid 80’s on the ABC, with an unspecified number of neither episodes nor seasons. However, there is up to 7 known episodes in the series.
The premise of the series allowed the audience to participate in the various scenarios adapted from a variety of crime literature, such as the Sherlock Holmes’ short The Adventure of the Speckled Band. Each segment would mostly have a whodunit layout, where the audience must carefully observe all items, comments and individuals presented within the segment in hopes of uncovering the execution of the crime correctly through the use of various distinct methods given as brief demonstrations prior to the presentation of the main segment of the episode. Weather the given method is detection of time, sound, visuals, or continuity within individual actions or alibies.
Writing
Known to have been broadcasted in 1985 on the ABC Network, appears to be 5 total episodes in the series. It aired between September 19th 1985 to November 20th, 1985 with each episode broadcasted Twice Fortnightly on Wednesdays 11:40am – 12:00pm and on Thursdays 11:20am to 11:40am. Average duration for each episode is 20 minutes. Total estimate duration of the series is 1h 40mins.
The show’s premise is to explore the wide variety of uses of writing within both daily life as well as specific circumstances, these include how comedians write their material as well as one episode centring on the 1985 Vote with Your Feet Palm Sunday nuclear disarmament march.
Following is a description listing of each episode from excerpts from a Years (Grade) 5 – 8 educational TV guide accompanied with my copy of the show:
Sept 19, 25
“The Story Teller”
An author, Nadla Wheatley, writes a story about a Greek family living in Newtown, an inner suburb of Sydney. The program shows how Nadia draws on her personal experiences to create authentic background and characters
Oct 3, 9
“Vote with Your Feet”
The program records the variety of media used in a campaign to persuade the public to attend a disarmament march. How do the organisers decide to choose what they will do to publicise the march?
Oct 17, 23
“Whose Story?”
The program starts with a simple two sentence story. It then explores the number of ways it can be told.
Different styles of writing, and different points of view from which to write are shown and different details are focussed on for each version of the story
Oct 31, Nov 6
“Writing for Survival “
A young girl falls into a ditch, is seriously injured and is taken to hospital by ambulance. The police, the council, the newspapers and the radio are involved in investigating the cause of the accident. The hospital staffs monitor the girl’s progress. The program show how relevant information is recorded exchanged and stored.

"Performance
"
Mandy Salomon, a stand-up comic preparing for a performance with a group of primary school children. We see her deliberately gathering information by observing, listening reading, writing and finally performing.
Conclusion
Truly hope this provided information will be enough needed for you all. If any request for footage of the series is needed, don’t be hesitant to comment in the thread. For I don’t plan on wanting to re-watch them to much due to each tapes age.
