It might depend on the type of VCR you have, but (most) VCRs have a digital clock that keeps track of a tapes runtime. I would check and see if your VCR has one, since you can use it to take notes on what's on a specific tape. When I'm archiving, I write down the name of the show, followed by the approximate timestamps of how long the program lasts. (something like: 45:00-1:15:00, doesn't have to be precise but it should be close)

Also, even if a show has already been archived/is readily available, many people are interested in the commercials (if they're present). The Internet Archive is down at the moment due to a security breach, but I highly recommend it for uploading VHS recordings.
