Like many movies in the 80s Exterminator 2 was heavily edited to avoid an X rating, though in the case of this movie it wasn't just a few violent scenes, the actual final act apparently changed greatly for whatever reason and probably still could've made it on an R-rating but producers apparently clashed with star Robert Ginty and ended up doing reshoots with a double wearing an outfit that hit the fact that he wasn't Ginty. The director apparently self-censored a lot of stuff before even submitting the film to the MPAA knowing there was little chance of it being kept in(including one shot in the trailer of a helicopter crashing into a bar and blowing up). Even after that there the MPAA still insisted on trimming a scene of a guy being shot at the beginning feeling it was too violent. The second half of the film was originally quite different as Ginty's girlfriend does not get killed by gang members like she does in the final version, instead his character ends up confronting leader X and gets shot by him and is about to be killed until his girlfriend shows up and kills X herself.
I wonder if the original version of that film has survived in any form, I sure hope so.
