90's film with a 'weird' girl eating an onion like an apple

I've been searching for a film (maybe a tv series) I seen as a child were a 'weird' girl eats an onion like an apple. There's a vague memory of her maybe being an alien/ from a different dimension but she could just be weird.

The scene I remember is its a close up of the girl eating an onion while she's sitting on play ground apparatus, could be wrong but I defiantly remember her sitting. I think she was dressed 'weird', or had an odd dress sense. Eating onions is normal for her/ the onion was in her packed lunch but ate the onion anyway thinking its normal behaviour for humans.

After we see her eat an onion the scene cuts to other girls/ voice over of other girls talking about how strange the onion eating girl is and how disgusting eating a raw onion is.

She might be living with the main boy of the film who's the same age and is trying to protect her. I might be making that up inn my head though but if I'm not I feel like the other girls where talking to him when it cuts from the girl eating an onion. 

I seen it in the 90's that's all I can recall unfortunately. I think it's a typical 90's/80's bullied kid get their comeuppance film with a weird twist.

It's not Holes, Seinfeld, iCarly, Drake & Josh, Victorious or suite life on deck. Besides two westerns and an Australian prim minister eating an onion that's what came up in my searches.
