Im trying to find a game I played as a kid in the late 90s early 2000's that im convinced is lost media. The game was a futuristic cyberpunk style game with hover cars equipped with ballistic weapons, such as machine guns, rather than lasers or energy-based weapons. The tracks were large, intricate, and featured loop-de-loops and wide turns. The atmosphere was similar to F-Zero or Wipeout, with tracks hovering high above the ground. The game had a third-person perspective, and I distinctly remember character portraits similar to Twisted Metal or Battletanx, where each driver had a backstory, vehicle stats, and unique weaponry.
where and when
I played the game at school in Southern California, specifically in Simi Valley, sometime in the late 90s or early 2000s. I remember playing it on a PC, possibly as part of a demo, and it came in a jewel case (likely a discarded box). The game had muted audio since we weren’t supposed to be playing games at school, so I don’t recall any music or sound effects.
style of play
The game had a cyberpunk aesthetic with hover vehicles that resembled futuristic hot rods or fighter jets. Vampyre, one of the drivers, had a red car with a large engine sticking out and a ring at the back, while another character, Maya, had a car styled like an atomic bomb, with a silver and black design. The racing was fast-paced, and the tracks had a very futuristic, sleek design, similar to Mute City from Super Smash Bros. Melee. The environment was typically overcast and grey, with tunnels and wide, winding sections.
characters
- Vampyre was a mutated cyborg with tan, scaly skin, long fangs dripping venom, and extra metallic arms coming out of his back with cannons for hands. His vehicle was sleek, red, with wings and a large engine, resembling a cyberpunk Ferrari or missile.
- Maya was a half-black or Latina woman with cheetah-like spots covering her skin, short dreadlocks, and a more Aztec or Mesoamerican style in her design. Her vehicle was shaped like the "Fatman" atomic bomb with a propeller in the back, no wheels, and lots of lights and panels.
gameplay
The combat racing aspect was similar to Wipeout or F-Zero, but with ballistic weapons. Each vehicle had its own weapon and driving stats, and the game allowed players to choose.
lost media
I’m starting to believe this might have been a demo or even an unreleased prototype, considering how little information I’ve found on it. The game was visually impressive for its time, likely leveraging the PC’s stronger capabilities compared to consoles like the N64.
A.I. Recreations
I have used craiyon and chat gbt to recreate some imagery from the video game as best as I can remember. Keep in mind it likely doesnt look EXACTLY like this these are just some rough "police sketch artist renditions"
