Klonoa is a REALLY great PS1 platformer game from the 90s. It was on sale on the switch, and I bought the game because I wanted to get something new for my switch.
Anyways, the game looks like a regular 2.5D platformer, but don't be deceived, as this game punches you in the face TWICE with some emotional scenes.
The first time this game gets dark is the 6th level (I think) where Klonoa's "Grandpa" gets murdered by Joka (The Secondary Antagonist.) Which caught me off guard, as this game was just sweet wholesome fun up until then.
Anyways, after that happened, I continued on with the game, up until I beat the final boss. Huepow sacrifices himself to save the world, but luckily, he survives anyways.
The final cutscene plays, and it seems like it's gonna be a cute happy ending, but then Huepow reveals to Klonoa, that he was never actually lived in their world, and all the memories he had with Huepow were made up to make him trust Huepow with saving their world. It was all just a dream for Klonoa, and he is then forced out of their world via portal. Huepow tries to help him, but to no avail. And Klonoa is gone from their world.
Yeah, that part freaking broke me, and I cried like a baby. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is now my favorite game, and i'm gonna be changing my pfp.
Oh, and here's the scene that made a pipe break in my eyes
Makes me both sad and relieved that the film version never came to fruition! Thought I wouldn't mind an OVA sometime, sort of like what happened with Animal Crossing
The series got a pretty interesting amount of merch, manga, and exclusive games in Japan. Namco was clearly gunning for it.
Some people may dismiss Klonoa when we already had SO many "cutesy looking" and "mascot" platformers during that time, and I get that the games can be on the easy side, but they are definitely worth playing.
