Hi! I had recently found an old Mortein commercial that was featured in the documentary "The Great Australian Fly," and I want to find the full version of it.
For most of you who don't know: Mortein is an Australian insecticide company, and they have featured their antagonistic mascot, Louie the Fly, since his birth in 1957. In each ad (particularly from the 60's-90's), he is shown flying around a family's kitchen, singing a jingle about how dirty and disgusting he is before getting killed from being sprayed with Mortein.
The video below is a segment from mentioned doco and has the Mortein commercial animators, Geoff Pike and Cam Ford talking about how Louie the Fly was created, it then shows a few clips from a Mortein commercial that is presumably from the 1960s. The ad contains Louie and his mates jumping out of a car to spread diseases to a family, with Louie the Fly singing his jingle, the narrator also states that Louie is "public enemy number one".
Now I'm trying to find the full version of said commercial, and I have been scrubbing through multiple VHS recordings of 60's Australian adverts I find on YouTube but I haven't managed to find any trace of it. There are very few recordings of ads from this era, and my best guess to that is that recording TV wasn't that easy back then, so I don't really have the highest of hopes in finding this ad.
Perhaps I could contact Mortein about this commercial since they should already know of the ad's existence, considering the fact that they gave permission for it to be used in The Great Australian Fly, or possibly the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA) while I'm at it, as they were featured in the credits of the doco.
Update 05/08/2024:
Turns out that the NFSA doesn't distribute copies of their archives to people who aren't in the media or education field, so I'll try to email Mortein about the advert.
