Title is self-explanatory. In this thread, you can talk about video games that for any reason, never saw the light of day. It can range from games that you thought had huge potential, or would have been a fun curiosity if it was officially released to the public.
I would exclude previously unreleased games that were eventually published by their original owner (like Nintendo eventually releasing EarthBound Beginnings and Star Fox 2 years after their original intended release date), but games that eventually had builds released to the public not by their original owner are fine.
Here are my personal five picks:
1. Daredevil: The Man Without Fear (PS2, Xbox, PC): I know this one has a PS2 build found by the Hidden Palace, but it looks like the game could have been decent if it was finished and had cool mechanics like Daredevil's "Shadow World" (which allows you to view the world from his perspective) as well as being faithful to the comics of the time.
2. Mother 3/ EarthBound 64 (N64, N64DD): I think this game could have been a great RPG game for the Nintendo 64 had it been finished. Though it's undeniable that some of the graphics have shown their age, they probably looked very impressive for the time and its presentation is solid. Who knows what would have happened if we got this version of Mother 3 and got an international release, which unfornately has still not happened for its 2006 Japan-only Game Boy Advance release yet.
3. Dragon Hopper (Virtual Boy): Out of the several cancelled Virtual Boy games, I thought this one had the most potential because its premise, while basic, sounded like it could have been a fun experience with mixing both action-adventure and RPG elements. If only it wasn't scheduled for a release on the doomed from the start Virtual Boy...
4. Sam & Max: Freelance Police (PC): While I'm not a Sam & Max fan, I thought this game had potential to be a good sequel to Sam & Max: Hit the Road, which makes its sudden cancellation by LucasArts all the more painful. I'm still wondering how its story would have played out compared to the later TellTale games.
5. Nintendo Puzzle Collection (GCN): While its original versions of Dr. Mario and Yoshi in the collection have been previously released in English, I'm curious to how Panel de Pon would have received its first English translation and be released unaltered into one of Nintendo's franchises (though we would eventually get the game on Nintendo Switch Online, albeit in Japanese only). This game's planned English translation will always be a mystery since no reason was given for its cancellation.
