I was browing this forum on the thread (which I head recently heard about previously from a YouTube video), which then lead to to a Reddit post relating to it.
One of the comments on the Reddit post goes as follows:
"I love paranormal stuff related to tech. I think it's an underrated category that we'll see develop over time.
I realize probably most of it can be chalked up to glitches and stuff but there's some genuine weirdness out there like this.
I'd say around 1999 I was at a friends house playing worms on his Lan. It was the first time I'd ever played a pc game against someone in a different room.
Worms crashed and kicked me back to the desktop where a very pixelated chimpanzee quickly swung across the screen, and then everything broke. His dad owned a repair shop and said it was some kinda virus or whatever. I told him about the chimp and he didn't know but was able to fix it.
I've searched for this year's later among documented viruses and didn't find anything. Maybe I'm just dumb and can't find it but man it was spooky."
The same user replied to another comment asking if he saw the infamous Bonzi Buddy virus with this:
"This was a "realistic" albeit highly pixelated chimpanzee. I don't think it even had branches to swing on, it just monkey-bars'd his way across the screen and then everything went to shit."
Computer virus involving a realistic (yet pixelated / compressed) photo of a monkey, not Bonzi Buddy, sometime in the late 90's

the link in the first sentence returns back to this thread. It's the wrong link. Also the reddit link is to the Google glitch image and not this virus. Nice try

It doesn't seem unbelievable.
1. The story isn't creepy unless you are creeped out by simian vine swinging
2. The story is not obviously fake or embellished
3. The OP doesn't seem to be trolling
A virus making a little animation play before bricking your computer? Not that weird of a story. The only thing I'd like to see is more evidence, other people attesting to it.
I am however pretty amused by "I told him about the chimp" for some reason.
I don't know if location is crucial to the search. I skimmed through the OP's profile history and they claim to be American. Not sure what state though.

My mom claimed a similar thing happened to her computer back in the day. A monkey popped up and the computer suddenly crashed. She said it had a border around it. It's possible it could have been BonziBuddy, but she probably doesn't remember it very well, so if i asked her, she might not remember it.
I think this is real, and I don't get why so many are dismissing it as a hoax, true, it might be fake, however, there's no proof it's real OR fake, so I'm sticking with the "It's Real" side of it
Even if the monkey was purple, BonziBuddy wouldn't be anything similar to this. It's shitty adware, not anything like the "broke your computer" stuff of the 90s.
