I'm not really a pet person, I much prefer being by myself. To me a pet is just another mouth to feed and another expense. Besides I get uncomfortable enough around other people's pets so the last thing I need is one of my own.

I do like animals, but people get so dang crazy about their pets sometimes that it kinds of weirds me out. I mean, pets are definitely you should be on the same page if you cohabitate with someone, but still.

And at one point in my career, I would be out of the house for upwards of 14 hours a day on weekdays (plus extra time on the weekends), and it felt cruel to have an indoor pet that I couldn't even pay any attention to.

I somewhat liked my experience with pets, but personally I prefer a rock.

I guess another hot take here is that I actually prefer the other books of Gail Caron Levine to Ella Enchanted, even though EE is by far her best known work. Like, it's still a great book, I just like her other works better.
I also like The Cat Returns better than any other Ghibli film. Personal taste, don't know why, but that one I will watch over and over. Is it "better" than Ghibli's other works. Of course not, but have I watched it more than any other Ghibli work? Probably.

Like I said with Scrapyard Dog back in page 17, sometimes the adaptation can actually be better than the original.

I feel this about dub vs sub anime, especially older anime. sometimes a dub is so different from the original show that it's basically it's own media and good in its own ways??

Basically why The Magic Roundabout became so popular in the UK. It didn't follow the script of the original French version & instead made up their own wild dialogue.

The temperance movement/alcohol prohibition were not complete failures. There was a nationwide shift in behavior and values, a bigger focus on healthier actions and attitudes. Heck, the temperance movement arose BECAUSE of how much SHEER excess consumption and vices there were in the poorer and working class areas of the country-wealthier women saw slums where married/family men drunk and gambled and smoked and whored away ALL the family income and they very much wanted to counter that. Especially in a time where their wives/daughters/female relatives had fewer rights than today. These upper class women were able to clean up some of the country as a result. Did it completely stop all these behaviors? Absolutely NOT, and stuff like alcohol prohibition did more harm than good in the end.
But the actual mindset behind the movement was not a bad thing, and there WERE some positive results in the population.

Yeah I think there's value in dubs that go "off script" and whichever one is "more valuable" comes down more to personal preference. A more free flowing script that sounds natural and has more of its own character? Or one that's a lot more faithful to the original material, at the expense of sounding somewhat more stiff (but is still more accurate). Pokemon is a prime example of it-many people still prefer the "looser" 4Kids dub to the more faithful but stiffer sounding Pokemon Company dub. Ditto for the ADV script vs. Netflix script of Evangelion.

I'm actually a big fan of the original 4kids one piece dub. I liked that it was silly pirates having fun. it was also the one I grew up with the DVDs of.

I remember people not liking the Netflix script of Evangelion BC they changed kaworus sexuality and feelings for Shinji to platonic.

I'm also a big supporter of fandubs. yes even the bad ones.

I also think it's wild the dub VAs for ghost stories still regularly work in the industry having never faced any negative reaction from it. in fact their careers are thriving. some have big roles in Nintendo games.

and Vic mignogna being in everything means I've been watching a lot more sub recently.

You're lucky, those 4Kids DVDs are super rare and pricey nowadays. I did manage to find a link to the entire 4Kids dub of One Piece and checked out the first episode out of morbid curiosity, wasn't as terrible as it's reputation suggested but I have a feeling the truly insane stuff won't come until later on.

Back in the 2000s that kind of edgy humor found in the Ghost Stories dub was par for the course, you saw it in a lot of animated stuff aimed at adults like Drawn Together and whatnot so it wasn't remotely shocking for the time and with social media not really a thing yet there wasn't really much in the way of outrage over some of those jokes which would very likely not fly today.

Aside from the English dubs already mentioned I also personally prefer the dubs of Escaflowne, Tenchi Muyo, Dragon Ball series, Digimon and Cardcaptors(only the DVD versions though, not the edited TV ones).

The Vic stuff is really unfortunate, I don't believe in punishing an entire cast for something one person did so his presence in something like the Broly movies isn't enough to make me avoid the English dub of them altogether as much as I loathe him as a person.

Yeah in fact I would say a "hot take" that probably isn't a hot take anymore is that I enjoyed the 4Kids/Saban/etc. dubs for what they were, and thought they were way overhated (especially 4Kids). Let's face it, at least here in the more puritanical USA, without these companies, a lot of these shows would have never been approved for "family/kids entertainment" in the first place. 4Kids, Saban, Toonami, etc. absolutely did some massive butchery of things in these shows and got stupidly over the top in some censorship, don't get me wrong, but I could still see the overall passion in the work. I still GOT why these shows "had" it.
That said, I do think people have calmed down from the massive internet hate wagon that was the mid-late 2000s.

The internet feels like humanity is way more "mean/cruel/stupid/extreme" than is actually reflected in real life interactions/experiences, just because you typically hear the most extremist, terminally online, echo-chambered, argumentative, controversy-craving individuals posting way more frequently on it and go viral way more often. The internet amplifies the crazy voices who post way more than, you know, the people with regular jobs, lives, friends, family, hobbies, moderate/balanced viewpoints, etc. Especially on modern social media sites. One crazy post will go viral, but the 100, if not 1000 moderate position on a topic? None of those will go viral. I feel MOST people do not think like people with "internet brain." Reddit, one of the most popular internet forums, is only actually regularly used by 1% of the US population at MOST.

Don't get me wrong, I've had otherwise normal, calm relatives who go wild crazy on Facebook with conspiracy theories, but for the most part, they are not really picking fights or causing problems in real life.

Keep in mind too that in other circumstances, the current anonymity of the internet means that people are more likely to say a LOT of things they don't believe in real life, would never be so impolite to say them in a public space, etc.
