MTV. They don’t even play music anymore. Do people still watch the modern day mtv???
I know they went through that "reality TV show boom" in the late 90s that continued into the 2000s and 2010s, but beyond that, I don't know what their identity is anymore. I miss old MTV-wasn't allowed to watch it (LOL) but I still feel nostalgic when I think of the 90s channel, which had a mix of interesting animation, reality shows, live hosted shows, and music videos. The only place I've "seen" people watching it is waiting rooms, I guess because no one feels like changing the channel. I think the last "major" cultural phenomenon that the channel hosted would have been Jersey Shore, maybe?
Wow, so instead of a company buying up the site and "more or less" ruining it (Disney with Club Penguin), the opposite happened here?
Around this time, Viacom was shutting down a lot of their online kid stuff, Monkey Quest was also shut down. I think Nickeloden at that time was sort of taking a new direction with their company. Tho maybe the timing was good for them because of COPPA and the death of Flash would have also killed these sites.
The new company that bought them (Jumpstart), just didn't have the budget or the manpower to match Viacom's version of the site. It was definitely a low time for Neopets and the NFTs drama didn't help. They now are under new ownership (not Jumpstart) and the site is running a bit better.
OOF yeah, the loss of flash hit HARD when it came to enjoying older animation/games, or even making newer animation/games in that "style." Older flash animation/games are definitely a major interest of mine, even if I mostly just used the flash player for games on licensed sites like Cartoon Network. Pretty sure it has been mentioned yet but I'm still surprised Newgrounds is still kicking despite being clearly aged, especially in terms of the stuff people upload onto it. It's stuff like Friday Night Funkin' that manage to make it stand tall somehow.

As pointed out in here and another thread, the "sterility" of and "corporateness" and "adddssss overload" of so many modern websites and especially social media might be driving people to other locations like Newgrounds, heck, even if they haven't been "active" on the site in years. I originally just joined this forum to ask about a "lost" Hamtaro guidebook and a Hello Kitty McDonalds plush mystery, but I have found this sort of forum gives me major nostalgic, comfy feelings similar to what I had on older, less centralized internet. And I would rather be here than on social media much of the time.
Watched the KCAs when it aired this year and it was kinda relieving seeing Adam Sandler win an award, made me feel a little less out of the loop with modern culture.
I remember hearing so much about it in its heyday in the late 90s. I thought that by now it should have been either shut down a long time ago or bought out and merged into something else.
That is actually on myself list of recommended search engines for lost media because it's so old you can find some obscure stuff with it.

I binged Catfish last month and modern mtv is kinda depressing. Outside of Catfish and a show called "Im in a secret relationship", the content is made up of revivals of shows that were popular during its first decade of live action boom, such as Jersey Shore and Teen Moms.
Watched the KCAs when it aired this year and it was kinda relieving seeing Adam Sandler win an award, made me feel a little less out of the loop with modern culture.
Part of me DOES actually get me curious about what is nominated and what wins every year. Older stuff, newer stuff, internet stuff, "classic stuff," music/art/TV/movies/games/books, what are the modern kiddos/tweens into? We may not have as much of a shared cultural identity as in say, 2005, but it's still neat to see what clicks with so many modern people.
I used to also follow the polls and awards back in the Nickelodeon magazine days and it was so much fun!!!

Unfortunately, doesn't surprise me. I know that reboots, remakes, reimaginings, etc. will ALWAYS be things, and they make money and keep people curious comparing, but dang it, so much modern entertainment is just regurgitations of what I've already seen before. I'm sure MTV is just hanging out and trying to ride out 30+ years of nostalgia, like so many other TV networks are doing to survive (not thrive, merely SURVIVE)

Fun fact - most government institutions and other big companies/service providers still use Windows XP. There's so much legacy software on these systems that switching to a newer operation system would be a burden. You can even still activate Windows XP in 2024:

NBC station WBIR still rerunning The Heartland Series, a show about Appalachia culture & its more modern, but still Tennessee-focused spinoff, Heartland Tonight(and with no connection to the 2007 TNT medical drama show, Heartland). In an era where any & all local programming on big networks like ABC, NBC, CBS & Fox are gone outside of the news, seeing that they still air reruns of a show that's fondly remembered in this state is honestly cool! The original series is reportedly still produced quarterly, which is awesome to hear!

I know people who still watch Jeopardy, Judge Judy, the local news segment, and/or Wheel of Fortune on the dot, every day. It's sort of a weird comfort moment.

Whenever it's the evening and there's nothing else to do I watch the Jeopardy on NTV right before Entertainment Tonight. It's just what I do.

In the UK we currently have a few MTV channels that do only play music: MTV Music, MTV Hits, MTV 80s and MTV 90s. There is also MTV HD channel that doesn't play music and has reality shows like Catfish, Geordie Shore, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders etc... I watch Catfish but never watch anything else on that channel.
