I know I’m late to this, but figured we might as well make a thread for this. We are gathered here today to remember one of the grandest petitions trending on Twitter, known as “#ReleaseTheAyerCut”, a petition which rallied to get David Ayer’s eponymous directors cut of the film finished and released to the public, seeing as back when the film was in production, Warner Bros had “beaten it into a comedy”.
And after nearly four years of clips and scripts being leaked to us, to endless Twitter trends, among many other things…
It all amounted to nothing.
On January 4, 2024, David Ayer had announced that he is deciding to move on from his cut, with the way he stated it seeming as though he’s giving up on not just the film and his own cut, but also DC overall, leaving his cut of the film to collect dust permanently, and effectively killing any chances of us ever getting to see his intended cut.
As much of a bummer as this may be, we have no choice but to just respect David Ayer’s decision to move on and just not bring it up with him anymore.
This shows that sometimes, no matter how hard you work for something, you still just won’t get what you want. In the end, the studio can take your movie away from you, lock you from the editing room, and trim, reshoot, cut and rearrange your film until it’s almost unrecognizable, and when you try to make it up to the audience you unintentionally upset, they’ll jeer at you and either assume your cut just “doesn’t exist”, or is just equally as bad, only off the basis that the theatrical cut sucked.
There’s also a lesson in here too. Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t always get what we want. We’ll just have to accept it.
With that said, I would have loved the chance to get to see this cut, and the fact that we pretty much never will is a depressing reality, but one we have no choice but to come to terms with.
R.I.P: Suicide Squad: The Ayer Cut
August 5, 2016-January 4, 2024.
We fought hard for you.
May you someday be leaked to the internet.
Wishing David Ayer the best.
You deserved better.
