X-Men: Mutant Wars & X-Men: Mutant Academy were released in the year 2000. They both had console versions and game boy color ports. It was part of a promotional multi-media attempt to "relaunch" the x-men in the world of video games following the success of grant morrisons new x-men, the ultimate x-men comics and X-Men Evolution not to mention the live action movies. This two part video game was to feature one series of games, X-Men Mutant Academy a street fighter esq fighting game with competitive fighting game play and X-Men Mutant Wars which would feature co-op game play and feature a narrative story driven experience. All the story and plot went into Mutant wars with Mutant Academy having no story. The idea was that Mutant Academy was effectively a "danger room simulation" with Mutant Wars being "the real deal" However when these games launched only the rather lackluster game boy color port of Mutant Wars saw a release. The console version of mutant wars, the real game never saw a release. I remember walmart, toys r us and nintendo power having promotional material in magazines detailing this as well as those "demo kioasks" that used to exist in 90s-2000's that had demo versions of games having a short video that made mention of mutant wars and this "x-men video game push" that was gunna help revitalize the franchise.
