You guys all know about lostwave, which are essentially unidentified songs that have been found(or partially found) throughout the years. Well, here's something a bit different: An unidentified VIDEO GAME that has been found!
What I'm talking about is some really, really, really obscure MS-DOS platformer seemingly from 1993 that I discovered on DOSGames.com a few moments ago while going through the side-scrolling platformer games. The game was seemingly published anonymously, having no title screen even. The game just starts as soon as it opens up. Here's the game itself: dosgames.com/game/clown/
This game is weird. Like not just the usual kind of weird. I mean, it feels fake in a sense. It doesn't look or feel like an actual video game because of just how... unusual it is. The sprites move in a choppy way & movement is block-by-block like in some MS-DOS platformers of ol', except the screen "scrolls" as opposed to being multi-screen or single screen. Notably, even jumping "scrolls" the screen in a choppy movement. The graphics & artstyle are like Revenge of the Sunfish meets Adventure Time to me, just with a limited, bleak color palette. Checkpoints are keyholes & only work once you get a key & take it to the keyhole. When you jump on killable enemies, they don't have a death animation of sorts or disappear. Instead, a skull & crossbones appear where the enemy was at & just... stays there for the whole game, which can leave you softlocked sometimes.
There is a map on top of the screen that shows the whole level of sorts, or perhaps the whole game rather. I've only gone as far as the 2nd keyhole. This game is quite hard. Not really "unfair", but it's a game with level design that can feel cryptic at times even WITH the map to help you out. Another reason it is hard is due to the weird controls. When you press left or right, your character will not stop moving until the "clown" either falls down a hole, dies from touching an enemy or touches a roadblock. You can also make him jump(by pressing the spacebar) to make him stop going in that direction, in which he jumps straight up. The way you make him jump diagonally is really strange; He goes a certain amount of height & the higher he goes up, the less amount of diagonal moves he can make. It's hard to describe, but that's the best way I can describe it.
So yeah, an oddball MS-DOS platformer of unknown origin. A really messed up one I can say.
OH, I FORGOT ABOUT THE CONTROLS:
Left & right make you move left & right
Space makes you jump
Up makes you climb ladders
Those are the only buttons I know of. Not sure if there are any other buttons that do things.
