This was the original feature film based on the classic American song of the same name. It went through hell in postproduction due to the Hays office refusing to allow the original version to be released, and changes were made before Republic Pictures released it in 1936. One of the changes I know of personally was that any performance of the song was deleted from the film itself. The circumstances of the shooting of Johnny were also altered, with - in this version, at least - Frankie actually being innocent of any wrongdoing. The original version of the film that was rejected by the Hays Office is lost.
