Googling things and not getting what you are looking for.

Might not help much, but check out my list of search engines. Mojeek's setting page also has some good recs. Sadly these days, you gotta use as many search engines you can. General rule of thumb for me is if duckduckgo (my main) doesn't have it, and if google doesn't have it, and if bing doesn't have it, use Margnalia.

Some people like Todd in the Shadows have mentioned that searching via Google has gotten objectively worse over the last few years and I have noticed it's definitely more annoying to find the thing you're looking for. AVGN even mentioned it once saying it used to be easier to find out info about the infamous Atari landfall. One thing i've found that helps is using quotes when searching on Google as that means that whatever word or phrase you put quotes around will show up in a search and that's helped me out quite a bit.

You can also yield decent archival results if you do a custom time range. When we were looking up stuff for Yeah Yeah Beebiss, I found a ton of info about Funco which debunked a lot of "the employees were in on it" theories due to it being a small family business and there being archives of that.

I get this a lot too, especially because I have to look things up frequently at work. It's not just obscure things that are hard to find and most people are noticing now.

I use "site:(website)" a lot. Putting "-" before irrelevant words that aren't a part of your search helps sometimes. For songs I can't find immediately I'll add "lyrics". If it's an obscure song then those tend to be found on random lyric websites. You can use "before:(date)" with youtube too.

Google gives too many sponsored and shopping results, but it's consistently worse for me with any other search engine. Even duckduckgo, I have trouble getting it to understand what I want even if it's something not too obscure and I'm using exact terms. I always end up going back to google. I use other search engines as a backup because otherwise I can't find anything. I think we got too used to having a single source for everything when that concept is inherently unsustainable.
