Initially posted to the TOMT Subreddit. A NickToons short that terrified me as a kid
It must’ve been at least 2004, I remember seeing it for the first time in the middle of the night on the big CRT in the living room.
The animation starts off like this: A girl is on the train. She gets distracted by a monkey she sees… I don’t remember what it was doing—floating around maybe? He was like a magical monkey, and the train was magical too I guess. The monkey had a very playful and overall mischievous air about it, sometimes teasing the girl but I can’t remember how. At some point the train stops, and when the door opens they’re at a beach.
By the end of the short, the girl wakes up on the train. When she looks at her lap, her sketchbook is there with a drawing of the monkey from her dream. The train continues off screen, followed by the monkey as it floats behind with a giggle until it follows the train off-screen and the short ends with black.
Idk why, but I get the feeling that the animation itself had been one of the winners of a NickToons animated shorts competition… This might be me misremembering though, so take it with a grain of salt. I tried checking through the winners of the NickToons Film Festival, but couldn’t find anything that fit the bill.
I watched lots of NickToons around that time, when there were no commercials just random bumpers and interstitials and shorts. I don't remember this exactly but it sounds kind of familiar.
