Back in the 90s I remember watching an short animated film about a red crystal that could have been part of a series. The setting looked like one of those medieval fairy tales.
What I remember the most was that this red crystal (rather a group of red crystals) yielded a great power to whoever held them. I remember that at one point a bearded thin wizard (or maybe just a bad guy) who was the villain was able to seize the crystal and granted him a lot of power and was going mad. I remember that there was a woman who warned of this red crystal's great power. Towards the end of the movie the wizard had the red crystal in one of his hands and was laughing while throwing these rays of power. He had an assistant who was short and stubby and was kind of a comic relief. During this scene he falls on his back laughing and eventually gets turned into some creature while still laughing.
However, for some reason someone (unfortunately I can't remember) like the hero made him drop the red crystal from his hand. The red crystal fell on the floor and shattered into pieces. The wizard man said "No!" as he was trying to catch it but did not succeed. Shortly after he gets withers quickly into a skeleton.
For some reason I thought it had something to do with an old series called "Britannica's Tales from Around the World" but I was unable to find anything resembling that story. It had an animation style from the mid 80s to early 90s.
I have done Google searches on it, but I was unable to find anything close to it.
Could it be The Swan Princess from 1994? Or one of the many sequels, like Escape from Castle Mountain?
I checked out "The Swan Princess" and it's not that one. The design of the villain is much different than the one I remembered. The one from the movie that I saw looked more cartoony and less menacing than the villain in "The Swan Princess"

Are you certain that it was a movie? My suggestion would be the show Skeleton Warriors from 1994. The plot revolves around a red crystal that grants powers. Looks like the whole series is on YouTube, I linked the first episode below. Go to 5:00 to see the first appearance of the crystal.

I know this isn’t right, but the first thing that popped into my head was Care Bears II: A New Generation. IIRC the villain froze the characters in rubies.

I just watched it and I can tell it's not the same thing. For one thing it has a different style and what I saw has more of a fairy tale family-friendly look. I was about 10-11 when I watched it.

That looked promising, but I just watched it and it isn't it. :-(

The death sounds very similar to Rasputin's death in Anastasia (1997). The magical item is initially green but turns red when it is shattered, and he withers into a skeleton.

Here's the video of the scene in quesion:
It's a good guess, but what I saw cannot be anything post 1995. Who would have thought there is so much media about a powerful red crystal?
