So from what I'm understanding, Above The Clouds (a previously lost song) was never really lost, it was all a hoax to get us to listen to someone's song.
With how popular the Lostwave thing has gotten the past few years, you should always be at least a little skeptical of anything with a recent upload or search date. Stuff that's been sitting on WZS or Youtube for like 10+ years is likely much more legit.

Ehh, even still with those, SOMEONE could've had the tools back then to fake something. They were harder to find, but not IMPOSSIBLE.
Dreams are boundless, imaginations are infinite, space is a multi-directional spiral & Akazukin ChaCha is my favorite anime

I feel like Lostwave should not be considered lost media.
Sort of agree. A lot of the songs that are in the Lostwave category are available in their entirety, as opposed to just a low quality 30 second snippet. So the only lost part is the artist or origin rather than the full song (the "media" part of lost media). It's sort of like those "Where did this popular image come from?" searches. More like internet archaeology than lost media.
And as much as I'm into some of these searches and obscure/mysterious music as a whole, it is unfortunately very easy to "fake" (depending on your definition of fake). More-so than other mediums since there's literally millions of obscure songs out there. You could easily take any obscure catchy song off one of the mp3.com or MySpace archives, post a snippet on WZT or YouTube, and claim you don't know the song name or artist (i.e. "I found this CD on the ground in a parking lot"). Not to mention creating your own song is easier than ever before with the amount of tools out there.
I don't know - part of me thinks if people like the song then it doesn't matter that much if the search is based on a lie. Like with the "Above the Clouds" example in the OP - people still enjoy that song regardless of the context or backstory, or at least that's what I assume.
I'd say 'unidentified media' and lost media are different, not all unidentified media is lost media but some of it is. But sometimes you don't even know until it gets found if it was really lost or not. I would generally put lostwave in a different category from lost media though there is a lot of overlap in theme, vibes and audience

I've been out of the loop with the community, but I didn't know about Above the Clouds and what happened with that. Digital Girl was lost on me, too, and I only found out about it by way of threads saying prominent members of the lostwave subreddit are leaving after DG was revealed to be a hoax.
This is just tiring and I wish people would stop doing stuff like this. Go make your own songs for fun and stop dragging the community into your nonsense because you're discrediting the work the community does and making it harder for actual searches to be taken seriously.
honestly some of these hoaxes are so poorly put together I'm surprised they gain so much attention.
there was just so much weird stuff going on with digital girl I'm suprised it took so long to confirm the hoax.
there absolutely is a way to make an obscure song and then create hype around it via lostwaves but I don't think they're willing to put the time and effort needed to successfully pull off the perfect hoax

I think the community also needs to grow a sense of skepticism. Speculation and jumping to conclusions runs rampant in these circles, and there's no incentive to look at these things rationally, like there is on places like here.
"oooh, you're a- a freaked out child in the woods..."
