It would make more sense if this ''crossover'' aired on CBS, a network owned by Viacom from 2000 to 2005 who also aired Nick and preschool shows, but OP didn't say the year he saw this and Dragon Tales seems to have aired only on PBS networks. That’s so bizarre! But I know what you mean.
I have a story of my own that’s apparently a case of this. It’s about the Playhouse Disney show Out Of The Box, which I first saw when it had recently started airing. Anyways, for many, many years I had a memory of this episode where the female host was absent. I figured at first when I didn’t see anything about on Wikipedia’s episode list that I’d just got it confused with the “Revealing Feelings” episode (in which the male host is absent). But one thing didn’t add up. In “Revealing Feelings”, the kids stay to sing the goodbye song with the female host, but in the episode I was thinking of, I specifically remembered the host performing the goodbye song alone. Yet there was seemingly no evidence of another episode with a host missing.
Well it turned out that there were three season 1 episodes that apparently hadn’t been broadcast since at least May of 1999, so for a while I was convinced that my memory was correct (although I was shocked that it had been that long since the episodes aired, since I was only four and a half at the time). However, I recently asked the female host if she was missing from an episode, and she said she never did. More importantly, I’ve recently gone through old schedule listings on Newspapers.com, and it seems these episodes were only broadcast maybe 1-2 times after the show had first premiered; and I didn’t start really watching until almost 3 months into the show’s run. So I guess I dreamt this episode up.
That has to be what this is here, but isn’t it weird how that happens? I also remember season 2 of ZOOM having a slightly different cast for the first three episodes (David or Jared instead of Alisa, and maybe someone else instead of Jessie) but that clearly never happened either.
