Hey guys I'm looking for this book my mum read me once when I was a kid. The title could have been "The Lullabong".
It featured the following characters.
-The Lullabong - an alien, I'm remembering he resembled the Lorax but I'm not sure that's right.
-the space captain (he had a name) - prototypical Captain Kirk, buzz lightyear type character, he wore a retro futuristic white space suit with a fish bowl helmet and had a phaser.
THE PLOT
The plot of the book starts with the space captain being alerted to a planet putting out a distress signal, with a message that a creature called "The Lullabong" is terrorising the planet. He goes down on the planet in search of the lullabong with the alien inhabitants and its leader, the leader of the aliens at one point grabs his phaser and throws it away into a pit of alien vegetation or something and it sinks. The captain says "My Phaser! I need that to defeat the Lullabong" and the leader of the aliens basically says "I am the lullabong" and goes on about how captain was an idiot to answer the distress signal. This happens as the captain is either overpowered by the smaller pikmin like aliens or falls into the vegetation from before, losing his vision as the lullabong does his villain speech. There's a scene that cuts back to the ship or the planet or something and then it just ends?
Both me and my mum were really confused about what the point of this story was, it felt like the moral was "don't trust people" or "don't be a hero". I'm certain that this was a children's book and not a comic, the art style was Dr Seuss like, but obviously influenced by corny retro futurism.
Could be an Australian Author?
EDIT: I remember in the Lullabongs speech the captain wasn't the first and wont be the last to fall for the distress beacon.
