The film Snuff is actually a 1971 film whose original title was Slaughter. It's infamous for the finale added to the film by the distributor, in which none of the original actors appear. It depicts the murder of a girl onscreen that was actually staged with the help of a partial dummy of the girl. The original version, which was shot silent, is lost and the sound and dialogue were added by the distributor.

The film was originally shot by the husband and wife grindhouse team, Roberta and Andrew Findlay, and the actors in the final shot are all fake Shemps. The term itself was coined due to the sudden death of Shemps Howard, one of the Three Stooges, at which time another actor, Joe Lara was brought in to replace Shemps onscreen with his face usually hidden from view. Previously, this technique had been used in the silent film Shadows of Suspicion, in Barbara La Marr's last film, and in the 1937 film Saratoga.
