I remember when I was in middle school they would show us a series of short educational videos. I remember most or all of them, but I will list only the ones I remember the most vividly here. I saw these videos in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, between 2010 and 2013, and they were on a variety of historical subjects. Since a lot of you here are probably around the same age as me, you probably might remember these videos too. I will list the videos I saw grade by grade, subject by subject.
In 6th grade, we studied the history of ancient civilizations. I remember we would watch these really cheesy cartoons about Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China. From what I can remember the cartoons were made using very cheap, primitive computer animation software, and even though I watched these in 2010 it looks like it was made 10-15 years earlier. There was a cartoon for each civilization, "hosted" by a young girl from that civilization and time period. I remember the one about China very vividly; a girl living in Ancient China is looking at a painting of a road that forks into three smaller roads. She explains that this picture represents the "Three Paths of Faith": Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Now, I know that this video is highly inaccurate, and that the "Three Paths of Faith" were not a thing in Chinese society and were probably made up for the video. I've been looking all over YouTube for this and I can't find it, so it's really starting to bug me. If I can find that one, I can probably find the others as well.
In 7th Grade we learned about US History from Native American times to the US Constitution. I remember they showed us videos on each of the different groups of tribes. One of the videos was narrated by a Native American girl, but this one was live action. Again, it looks like it was made in either the 1990's or early 2000's. Towards the end of the video there is a part where the girl is chased through the woods by a man from a rival tribe who is trying to kidnap her. After she escapes, a narrator takes over and talks about how the Native American way of life was destroyed when the European settlers first arrived, and after that the video ends. There was also another short film they showed us that year about the battles of Lexington and Concorde, which had these crappy battle reenactments and a stock sound of a crowd gasping that kept playing throughout the video.
The last one I saw in 8th grade is kind of disturbing. It starts off with a quick narration about the end of the Civil War and Lincoln's death, and then goes on to talk about the second industrial revolution. What follows is a poorly-acted video of these women working in a factory. The machinery catches fire, causing the women to all scream at the top of their lungs. The fire grows and they can't escape the room for whatever reason. I can't remember what happens next, but I'm guessing they all died in the fire.
Thanks for reading this. If you happen to know what I'm talking about, or have found it on YouTube, please notify me.
