A 3D web plugin called Pulse 3D was launched in 1999 and seems to have defunct around 2006. It could render interactive 3D characters in-browser. A whole article on how it worked can be found here. A video of a Road Runner and Wile E Coyote animation made in Pulse 3D in on YouTube.
