Ok so the first question that might cross your mind is “What is a Blinkins?” They were basically a short lived franchise of toys that lasted for only 1986 made by LGN Toys about little firefly-like fairies that glow.
And like most toys from the 80s, they had their own animated media likely made to sell the toys and in this case, they have 4 specials produced by TMS Entertainment:
While the first 3 of them is available to watch on Youtube (albeit with The Bear and The Blizzard combined since they were released on vhs as one hour long movie instead), The Heart of Friendship is completely lost saved for a couple of screenshots that was uploaded on Youtube and the plot summary from its IMDB page that reads:
In fact, if it wasn’t for the screenshots, I would had thought it wasn’t real due to how hard it is to find information on it.
I’m not even exaggerating when I say it’s hard to find information on it. Besides from the IMDB page (which is taken with a grain of salt due to no sources other than this video), I seriously cannot find any mention of The Heart of Friendship and I have no idea if it’s even called that since IMDB and the video is the only source calling it that.
Not mentioned on tv listings, business papers, copyright pages via Library of Congress, books dedicated to talking about animated media like The Encyclopedia of Animated Cartoons, and not even on this Blinkins advertisement I randomly found while digging around. They always bring up the same 3 specials that is already found with some mentions of an “one hour long reprise special” for 1987 which stated earlier, is just The Bear and The Blizzard combined.
Apparently according to one of the voice actors that worked on the spanish dub of it, copies of the special were destroyed its the original broadcast. At first, I didn’t believe it but now it doesn’t sound that far off when it seems like they don’t want to acknowledge its existence. Why? I have no idea.
But at the end of the day, it’s just an 80s cartoon made to sell toys and probably not worth finding but I don’t know. There’s something about a lost special that seemingly everyone wants to pretend that it doesn’t exist despite having proof that it does compels me. Some comments said that they did seen it with some descriptions of the plot so maybe it is possible to find an airing but hard to track down since I have no idea what channel it could had aired since you know, tv listings never mentioned it.
My theory is that it could had aired around the summer season of 1986 since the other specials tend to be themed around the seasons and aired during its respected theme. Hopefully it will be found especially when The Magic Flower was actually found last year.
