When I was very young in preschool, I believe 1972, but let's say sometime between 1970 and 1975 I absolutely LOVED this sitcom which I watched once a week and never saw again. I watched this on US TV in the Washington, DC area. In my mind the other shows I watched around this same time were Laugh In, Walt Disney and All in the Family. I link this show to these two Disney productions- The Strange Monster of Strawberry Cove (1971) and the Secret of Dracula's Castle (1973). All of these shows could have been seen in the 18 month period of Spring 1971-Spring 1973.
I want to make sure everyone knows I am NOT referring to "Three's Company" and I am familiar with the 1973-76 UK series "Man About the House."
The show I loved featured two women who shared an apartment. There was a man who somehow lived above them. In my mind there was a staircase that was the focus of a lot of jokes. I had seen several of these episodes before this main one- the two women believe there is a ghost in their house. There is a knocking sound they hear. They rely on the man and maybe also one of his friends to investigate the ghost. Hijinx ensue. Then someone decides to call their landlord or a plumber and they find out the noise wasn't a ghost but was just a problem with the pipes. At the very last scene they congratulate themselves that they were not really scared of ghosts when off-camera the toilet flushes and the man jumps up in fright and the camera freezes on him with this scared expression.
I also remember a different episode where the man is wearing a lab coat and in my memory, which could be faulty, he was a medical student.
At some point I asked my mother about the show and she said that they weren't showing it anymore, which really sort of upset me. I can clearly remember asking my mother about the existence of this show around 1977. This is why I'm pinpointing this show to the early 1970s.
As far as I know this was the only show I saw during this era which featured a non-traditional housing arrangement.
Here's my dilemma-
1. The UK series "Man About the House" was aired in the UK in 1973 but I have absolutely no evidence that it was syndicated in the US during this time. Does anyone know if Man About the House was syndicated in the US at all in the 70s? I remember the show being syndicated in some cities in the US only after the success of Three's Company- let's say 1981
2. Even if the show was syndicated in the US, I can't find any evidence that there was a ghost episode. The clearest thing to me about this show was this ghost episode. Can anyone identify this via my description of the ghost episode?
