The reason I think it was a bad idea to find the wicked witch of the west episode of sesame Street was because now sesame Workshop caught wind of it and now they are in control of viewing sesame street episodes on American Archive of/for public broadcasting website.
Now you have to read an agreement and watch HBo max prints of old sst episodes. Any old funding credits or pbs/net logos can go bye bye.

What do you think of these consequence?
I don't give a shit about logos personally so that means nothing to me, the episodes themselves are what really matter.
No it was going to be found somehow. The repercussions aren't really surprising but I'm sure people will still find a way to find old sesame street lost media even with tighter restrictions.

It could also mean lost segments that hbo max cut out.
Well, had Sesame Workshop made the episode available to the public in the first place then it never would've had to have been 'leaked'. Them hiding it for so long decades after the original controversy is what doesn't make any sense to me. It's one of those episodes that would never be put back into television circulation anyways and all of the little kids who got frightened by the episode have long since grown up so there really was no longer an excuse to hide it anymore. Today's kids have access to far worse media to get scared of so I'd think the 'lost' wicked witch episode is pretty damn tame by comparison.
I honestly think it should've been included in one of those 'Old School' home release sets that came out several years ago. Sesame Workshop can cry 'copyright claim' all they like, hiding things like episode 847 like they did just invites the curiosity and emboldens people to start trying to track the lost media down themselves.
In retrospect I believe it had its good and bad effects.
The good being that the episode was found after years of searching although by questionable means however, the bad comes from the fact that it would only make finding lost Sesame Street episodes or segments all the more difficult because now there will be more restrictions put into place to make sure that leaks like this will never happen again, and it'll likely make Sesame Workshop more hesitant to make things like this available.
I pretty sure it was gonna be found somehow. But I don't think the person should've leaked it, it should've been some recording someone saved. That would've been a better idea

considering how rare it was for anyone to own a VCRs in the 70s much less to record programs back then the chances of someone actually having recorded this episode back when it aired were EXTREMELY slim so realistically this was the only way that episode was ever going to come out.

leaking it was the only way sadly, and because of that, they have to lock the article for ours and their legal safety. Furthermore, not wanting another instance of a leak being misattributed by them. I like that we found the episode, but in my opinion, it should've been another way for it to be found.
