Around 2010-2012, I used to watch this show on TV all the time that was hosted by a young man and a puppet that he controlled named Pen-Pal. I used to watch the show all the time on Xfinity On-Demand (can't remember what station it was on originally) and would often follow the mans drawing tutorials. The show may have been on the air prior to the years I watched it. It definitely wasn't that old though, since the episodes were very HD.
As I mentioned above, the show was hosted by a young man, probably 20-24 years old. He was a thin white guy, who spoke with an extremely thick Southern accent. His voice was very monotone, not really showing much emotion. He was almost always wearing a baseball cap, and he had short brown hair. He also had very prominently crooked teeth.
The show always opened with the man singing the shows theme song on a banjo. The only lyrics to the theme song that I can remember off of the top of my head are "pen-pal is a funny/funky friend but he gets the job done in the end". I can't remember if he said "funny" or "funky" but it was definitely one of the two.
"Pen-Pal" was the name of the puppet who was essentially the shows co-host. The host often controlled the puppet, but sometimes it would be controlled by someone else off-screen. The puppet looked like your typical yellow Ticonderoga pencil, and he had big eyes and a controllable mouth. He may or may not have had arms.
The show took place inside of a very cartoonish looking art studio. The only details I can remember about the studio were the yellow walls and pieces of art from previous episodes that hung in the background. Whenever the host was giving drawing instructions, he would sit at a yellow table with the camera above his head, looking straight down at the paper he was drawing on. Pen-Pal would also frequently be seen on the table, assisting with the drawing.
I used to watch this show a lot, but can only remember two episodes vividly off the top of my head:
1. An episode where the host teaches the viewer how to draw a Native American. The host also gave brief commentary about Native American culture while he was drawing.
2. An episode where Pen-Pal asks the host about colors can compliment each other. The host then gave a very basic lesson on color theory, and how specific colors can be used to emphasize other colors. I remember him bringing out a drawing of a cloud, and then showing how the color blue can be used to "make white things look whiter."
I have tried everything to find this show online, or any evidence of it's existence, but I just can't. I've googled the lyrics to the theme song, general phrases regarding the show, everything. Nothing comes up. I know that this show was real, since both my Mom and childhood friend remember me watching it. I know that the show was far from popular, but I'm hoping that someone else remembers it and can tell me what it's called?
I posted about this on r/tipofmytongue, and people made many guesses but none were correct. One person suggested that the show I'm thinking of may be "Art Attack", but I know that isn't right. The host of "Art Attack" is British, and the host of this show was American. The host of "Art Attack" is also way older than the host I'm thinking of, and there isn't a pencil puppet in this show.
Someone else suggested it might be "Pappyland", but that isn't it either. That show features multiple puppets, while this show only had one. "Pappyland" is also from the early-90's, and there's no way that the show I'm thinking of is that old, based on the quality. The episodes were always in HD.
If anyone else remembers this, let me know! Thank you!
