Obviously, Livejournal never had the cultural impact of a Facebook or Twitter, heck, not even really a Deviantart or Newgrounds or Something Awful, and the format was very EHHHH at times, if not outright painful or annoying at other times. But I remember blowing a decent bit of time on it back in the Twilight fandom in like 2008. I kind of wish the site would make a comeback.
I am just not a super traditional "artsy" person, I stopped drawing anything but holiday/birthday cards and foreign language calligraphy like a decade ago. I very much appreciate art, but I feel that I simply can't get into to the extent that others have:)
I make do with writing posts on Tumblr but it's not really the same. Thoughts?

I followed other people on there and commented on their posts(there was one guy who used to review movies on there but moved to Blogger) but never did my own journals or anything like that.
I think I had a LiveJournal account, but I didn't really use it. Tumblr kinda seemed like LiveJournal's successor in a way.
Speaking of tumblr, I saw this interesting post where someone said how they've more or less began to move away from social media (Twitter mostly) by keeping contact with mutuals on discord, and following creators' art pages/websites instead. It's made me wonder if social media is finally dying, or at least social media like Facebook and Twitter. Maybe blogs and forums will gain popularity again, because at least your surrounded by peers opposed to everyone and their grandmother. Just a thought.

Oh, that's very interesting. And yeah, I never had an account from what I remember, I just browsed the site for fandoms. It really felt like its own thing. I do agree that Tumblr likely usurped Livejournal in the end, but in some ways, I preferred Livejournal's format, being more of a writer/reader than artist. I know that Discord is VERY popular now with younger people, and I could see that becoming more of a force for them than Facebook or Twitter. There's just a certain charm to the Wordpresses, or Livejournals, or old forums or whatnot that sterile FB or Twitter don't replicate IMO, maybe young people will gravitate back towards those kinds of environments.
Honestly, think about how many younger people even use FACEBOOK anymore, look at how many jokes revolve around boomers and Facebook, not Gen Z and Facebook-I imagine Instagram or even Snapchat are way more relevant to them. Twitter is still a force because there has been no real "good" replacement, not even Zuck himself could take it down with Threads (at least as of now), sort of like how we've had no proper Youtube replacement despite daring creators' best attempts at creating one.

Same here, just browsed! Not familiar with blogger, interesting. I do remember the age of blogs too, I think one of my college classes even utilized that format at one point!

I just can't with Tiktok's format, I sometimes consume Insta reels and that's enough "reels style" for me haha. But I see what you mean. It has already had so much impact on younger people in such a short amount of time. I don't see TikTok really (or fully) replacing Youtube for an older population (IE Mil and maybe older Gen Z), but for a younger one? It's definitely a possibility.
EDIT: With TikTok now allowing for some text posts, also going to be interesting to see!

I think tiktok is gonna replace youtube tbh.
not a chance, you can't do videos like Mr Beast does on TikTok

I'm gonna be honest, I don't really know what Mr. Beast does. He like gives money to people? He wanted to recreate Squid Game?? Is he like a rich guy with a following?? He just suddenly appeared one day.

Yeah he's basically a Youtuber who become succesful by seeing what was trending and doing that(his early videos had him doing things like counting to ridiculously high numbers)and he spent basically all his time gaming the system and now he uses his money to do all kinds of crazy epic videos, some are pretty neat, he also helps out a lot of people like that one time he paid for a bunch of blind people to get surgery so they could see again.
With him being the most popular Youtuber ain't no way TikTok overcomes Youtube, especially not with the way they controversially try to censor random stuff(like they recently got in hot water for blocking videos talking about the WGA strike) a lot of people like myself don't trust that platform because of it being created in China and some of the dodgy ways they've gone after people overseas.

I mean that's fair, but I am unsure if youtube is much better. The censorship on the internet in general has gotten crazy.
Too young to have used it when it was actually popular, but I do browse it sometimes in order to look for Winamp skins and that sort of thing. I do wonder how much stuff on there is unarchived/hasn't been reuploaded to other sites.
You can really tell that a lot of people crave the customisability of blogs/personal sites, though. Just about everybody on fandom/stan Twitter these days uses Carrd or Linktree in order to do really basic things that literally every blogging/website hosting service is able to do, such as telling people about your interests, or (god forbid)... adding multiple links to other websites. And Tumblr gets a few new users every time another social media company screws up, and small communities are forming on Neocities and Spacehey. Obviously those are niche examples, but I hope more people start going back to that kind of format instead of just staying on whatever has the largest amount of users.

True. But youtube didn't always let you do longer videos, they used to be limited by 10 minutes. Idk, I'm thinking there's going to be a change due to youtube having competition. Not just from tiktok, but twitch and the like.

Customization was why I originally wouldn't leave MySpace for Facebook.
